This Bereavement 101: Basics of Grief and Bereavement presentation will be self reflective for the participant and explore ways to support those who are grieving a loss with practical tips around listening and what not to say. We’ll talk about how comfortable (or rather uncomfortable) we are as a society around death and dying and touch briefly on some grief theories. We’ll talk about the importance of self care as the helper too. We will also highlight when it might be good to refer into bereavement services.
Jennifer Kerr, RSSW
Jennifer manages all community volunteer programs and community volunteer training. She joined the team at Hospice Georgian Triangle just over a year ago and leads the caregiver support counselling and support groups. She also provides grief and bereavement support through both individual counselling and group support. Her educational background includes being a Registered Social Service Worker, and she’s finishing her BASc. She has extensive experience in providing support for seniors, helping patients navigate the healthcare system, and working in hospice palliative care.

Kate Cook, MSW, RSW
Kate is a Registered Social Worker with a Masters of Social Work specializing in Gerontology and Palliative Care from the University of Toronto. Over the past ten years, Kate has worked in a variety of settings including home and community care, community outreach, oncology, hospice palliative care and bereavement programs. She currently works at Tomkins House through Hospice Huronia supporting residents and their families and provides bereavement support to the general community. By supporting families through some of life’s toughest transitions, she strives to create space for reflection and honouring the legacies of those who have died

Louise Brazier, Bereavement Services Coordinator
Louise is originally from the UK, and has a background in community development, patient engagement and project management. Her passion lies in bringing Palliative Care into the community and putting the person at the centre of their care and journey. She feels privileged to be working with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to deliver care to those most vulnerable in our community. She believes that compassion is contagious and is aiming for an epidemic.
