Advanced Palliative Care Education – A.C.E.
Building on the Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care Program, ACE focuses on the support worker’s scope of practice in relation to the foundational concepts of Hospice Palliative Care.
ACE Eligibility:
- Completion of the Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care Course
- Must be a health care provider in a supportive role caring for people with a progressive, life-limiting illness (i.e. Personal Support Worker, Health Care Aide, Recreational Therapist, Volunteer, Social Worker etc.)
Performance Objectives:
- Develop trust and therapeutic relationships with the people and families you care for
- Learn effective ways to communicate with people with cognitive impairments
- Identify your role in maintaining confidentiality
- Enhance your team communication skills
- Learn ways to recognize and manage conflict
- Develop a self-care plan
- Appreciate the importance of the support worker role in observing and reporting issues in the physical domain
- Learn strategies for relieving pain, breathlessness, confusion and other symptoms
Completion Requirements:
- 100% attendance at the three in-person sessions
- Completion of two practical application assignments
- Sharing of practical application assignments with other learners at the beginning of session two and three
- Completion of evaluation after each session
