Hospice Volunteer Recognition Award

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

~     Leo Buscaglia

As part of the palliative care team, volunteers play an integral role in connecting those who are experiencing illness and grief to the community. The Modern Day Hospice Movement was built through the voluntary efforts of individuals who saw people were experiencing unnecessary grief, pain and isolation and said, “It doesn’t need to be this way.”  We are the beneficiaries of their efforts.

Today, Hospice Palliative Care is a growing field, and we are fortunate to have such exceptional resources in our area. However, we know that despite all of the professional resources that have been put in place to make North Simcoe Muskoka one of the leaders in palliative care, the true measure that sets this region apart is the dedication of our volunteers; members of the community who continue to give their time, effort and compassion to make the world a better place for the sick, for caregivers, for the grieving and for those who are dying.

In 2017, the Hospices of North Simcoe Muskoka decided to create a way to honour our volunteers.  The Volunteer Recognition Award is a way for  each hospice program in the region to annually identify two volunteers; one who provides support to the hospice program, and one who provides direct support to clients in the community, who embody the values and principles of hospice care.  They are truly the heart of hospice.
